Between Egypt and Canaan lies the Wilderness. And God's purpose in the Wilderness is to test Israel's reliance on Him and their relationship with Him. And it is a test that they often fail. Between the Sea and Sinai we have a sampling of that testing, providing us with a clear contrast between the persistent grumbling of Israel and the patient grace of God.
